Macbeth seemingly had no ambitions toward the throne until he heard it prophesied by three witches that he would eventually become Thane of Cawdor and after that King.
When the current Thane of Cawdor is arrested and later executed for treason, Macbeth is given the title Thane of Cawdor. Ironically, Macbeth is killed for exactly the same crime the original Thane of Cawdor committed: treason. What happened to the original Thane of Cawdor and why did he lose his title? He was executed because he had betrayed his country.
Macduff triumphs and brings the head of the traitor Macbeth to Malcolm. Malcolm declares peace and goes to Scone to be crowned king. The outcome of the fight is that Macduff kills Macbeth. He takes him offstage, then cuts off his head and brings it to show to Malcolm, who will now reclaim his rightful place as King of Scotland. Not so fast, says Macduff.
What does Macbeth hear? Lady Macbeth hears an owl and crickets. In this short soliloquy, he argues that it cannot be good. What images does he conjure that makes him feel frightened? Visions of murdering King Duncan. Assisted by that most disloyal traitor, The Thane of Cawdor, began a dismal conflict… Duncan pronounces the sentence that will leave a vacancy for Macbeth, who has not yet encountered the Three Witches. He was dumb to trust them. In response they summon for him three apparitions: an armed head, a bloody child, and finally a child crowned, with a tree in his hand.
These apparitions instruct Macbeth to beware Macduff but reassure him that no man born of woman can harm him and that he will not be overthrown until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane.
How do these apparitions build up Macbeth;s feelings of security? At the beginning of the scene, we begin to see a change in Lady Macbeth. She is no longer as confident as she was when she beseeched the spirits to allow her to be cruel. Lady Macbeth is a bundle of emotions at this point. Her confidence is still evident, but it is now mixed with nervousness and anticipation. He is more passive than Lady Macbeth, who has to convince him to usurp the throne.

He is a traitor to his kin firstly in killing King Duncan, the rightful, God-appointed liege, and then he deliberately continues to act in his own interest and not in the interest of the nation that he is supposed to be ruling and supporting by perpetrating murder and slaughter in a large scale, first with Banquo and ….

Why was the original Thane of Cawdor executed? He cheated on his wife. He killed the Queen. He refused to go into battle because he was a coward.
Therefore, the old Thane of Cawdor is executed for treason , despite his former appearance of loyalty to the king, and Macbeth is awarded that title as reward for his loyalty and bravery in battle.
