Why is book of eli rated r

This was a good movie, not filled to the brim with violence, which may be it's flaw. I am not a person who believes that a film needs to be filled with violence to be good.

There should be plenty of things going on, but it doesn't need to be shootouts and explosions left and right. Although, this movie may have needed more action. The good news is that when the action does come up, it's unbeleivably impressive. The direction is fantastic, and the acting is really good, especially Washington. The only flaw is that it took a little too much time to get things rolling. Not just in the beginning, but all throughout the film.

After an exciting action scene was finished, we were left with boring aftermath, then another action scene sometime later, and so on. Some dialogue pieces were really good, especially with Gary Oldman. But, there just wasn't enough fat trimmed in the editing room. Parents: This is a violent movie; it doesn't have nonstop violence, but it most certainly has graphic violence and shootouts, off-screen rape and cannibalism, on-screen sexual assault and sexuality but no sex or nudity , and some strong language.

Bottom Line: A well-made, if at time boring, apocalyptic action film that's a must-see for fans of Denzel Washington. And I am one of them! Thanks for reading! Adult Written by HappyMom September 13, This movie is action-packed and has a good twist at the end--however, it is also extremely violent, and there is an attempted rape scene which is very disturbing and certainly not appropriate for younger children and younger teens.

Adult Written by angrypanda90 August 14, Good for older teens. This movie is a very good movie. Violent yes but not Over the top violent. Eli is a man who is following God's will for him. Yes he does fight a lot of people but those who say violence and Christianity shouldnt mix clearly havent read the book of Judges in the bible. Eli doesnt kill random people at will he defends himself. Its aso in a post apocalyptic world. SO you can bet most people's morals went down the drain.

Parent of an infant, 2, 3, and 5-year-old Written by wilted6orchid August 4, Eli isn't just some violent guy! I have to disagree with the author's ragging on Eli as a role-model. Eli is a man on a mission doing what he believes God wants him to do. He does kill a lot of people, but he never kills anyone who didn't attack him first Parent of a 3, 11, and year-old Written by shelzmike July 24, Depends on the maturity of the kid I'm not going to rewrite what others have written about regarding the violence and cursing, etc.

Most have done an excellent job and they are pretty spot on. While there was a bit of cursing, it wasn't simply gratuitous for the sake of just saying it like many other movies are. Additionally, I was not cringing every time I heard it. Usually, there was enough action, or plot rather, going on that the words were not quite the focus. As far as the violence - to be honest, I was expecting more based on the reviews that I saw here. From my recollection, there are only about 5 or 6 scenes that were fairly graphic, but nothing too off-putting.

It's hard to say sometimes, but again I do not think it was gratuitous and fit with the movie, if that makes any sense. Most were over just as quickly as they began. Finally, we are a Christian family and the plot of the movie was interesting and different and I was entertained the whole time; however, it wasn't really the best movie I have seen. There are some various Christian messages, but I am not sure it was really intended to be a full out Christian message.

A man shoots at a man twice as he walks away from him the man is not struck. A man is fired upon by many other men, he fires back and several men are shot -- one falls from a rooftop blood spurts , others jerk as they are struck, and one man is struck in the leg and he moans blood spurts.

A man threatens another man, who slams his head into a table we hear a crunch, see his bloody nose and mouth and he collapses to the floor. A man threatens another man, asks him for a book and tells another man to shoot him. A man points a gun toward a man as he walks away he does not shoot. We see a wounded man having bullets removed from his leg we hear squishing, he moans and we see a bloody bandage on his leg.

A man shoots another man in the stomach he falls to his knees and we see a bloody patch on his shirt. A dead man with a bullet hole in his forehead lies in a forest with a gun on the ground near him it appears that the body is partially decayed.

A man opens a closet door and we see a dead man hanging from a rope. We see a couple of human skeletons in burned out cars on a desolate roadway. A man and a woman fall through a trap door and are held at gunpoint. A man and a woman are held at gunpoint. Washington and the Hughes brothers do a good job of establishing this man and his world, and at first, "The Book of Eli" seems destined to be solemn.

But then Eli arrives at a Western town ruled by Carnegie Gary Oldman , who, like all the local overloads in Westerns and gangster movies, sits behind a big desk flanked by a tall bald guy and, of course, a short scruffy one. How are these guys recruited? Wanted: Tall bald guy to stand behind town boss and be willing to sacrifice life. All the water you can drink.

In this town, desperate and starving people live in rusty cars and in the streets. We meet Carnegie's abused wife Claudia Jennifer Beals and her daughter Solara Mila Kunis , named, for some reason, after the cause of all the destruction. Carnegie hurts Claudia to control Solara. How he controls the fearsome bald guy is hard to say.

The third act is recycled, but done well, out of many Westerns in which the hero and the girl hole up and are surrounded. So many other movies are referenced that we almost miss it when their hideout house is perforated by bullets in " L.

Confidential " style. That allows countless beams of sunlight to shine in and function as a metaphor. Carnegie needs Eli because Eli has maybe the last remaining copy of a book that Eli believes will allow him to expand and rule many more towns. The Hughes brothers have a vivid way with imagery here, as in their earlier films such as " Menace II Society " and the underrated " From Hell. Only a tiny portion of our readers give. Thank you. Home Reviews Movies. None Light Moderate Heavy Language. Washington plays Eli, a laconic man journeying westward across America to carry a sacred book to safety, hoping that it will restore mankind and bring a better future.

Eli and Solara face opposition from evil men who want to use the book for their personal gain.
