Silk is as tricky to work with as it is beautiful. Most silk weaves have a tendence to slip during handling and snag easily, and are prone to stains from grease and sweat.
Unfold your silk fabric before cutting and iron the middle fold flat; If the break line does not disappear, you should leave it out when cutting, as it will not disappear even after several washes. Use very sharp fabric scissors to make clean, smooth cuts; Use a linen cloth or sheet as a base to prevent your silk fabric from slipping too much when you cut it.
Always pre-wash your silk fabric on the same cycle you plan on washing the finished project. Silk has a tendency to shrink after the first wash. Use extra fine pins during construction and try and avoid pinning on areas that will be visible on the finished garment as silk can sometimes retain pin marks in the weave even after washing and ironing. Pattern weights are also helpful when cutting out pattern pieces as silk will slide around under the paper pattern. A rotary cutter and cutting board will ensure best results.
Always do a test stitch on a scrap piece of fabric before jumping in to your main sewing project. Silk is very delicate and requires a precise balance of upper and lower thread tension on your sewing machine, as well as high quality, fine-tip sewing machine needles and ideally matching silk thread. Without these you may find yourself battling puckered seams or even find your silk is drawn under the feed dogs of your machine during sewing. Different kinds of silk require different machine set ups, so check the recommendations for your specific fabric.
Pay particular attention to the recommended needle size: most projects can get by with a smaller-size universal needle, however particularly delicate fabrics such as silk charmeuse or organza may require a Microtex needle to prevent snagging and dragging during seiwng. Store unprocessed silk rolled up in a dark place; the material can become brittle when folded for an extended time and is also sensitive to direct and excessive sunlight which may cause it to discolour or yellow.
Some varieties of silk require regular cleaning. These include: taffeta, chiffon, satin, georgette, silk brocade and organza as well as printed silk fabrics. Silk Fabrics. Anything made from this incredibly soft fabric is guaranteed to feel absolutely incredible. In addition to a gorgeous sheen and fantastic drape, silk also has excellent insulation properties, making it an excellent choice for both breezy summer dresses and cosy base layers.
